Medical-visit workflow for foreigners in Beijing hospitals

Beijing boasts the highest density of top-tier hospitals and leading specialties in China, ranking among Asia’s best in general medicine, oncology, cardiology and transplantation. Minimally invasive surgery, targeted/immunotherapy and AI imaging are all first deployed here, bringing clinical standards in line with Europe and the U.S. Should you choose Beijing for treatment, we will provide the above-mentioned full-length services described above.

  1. Choose a hospital
First-tier public hospitals with international departments (e.g., Peking Union, Beijing Friendship) or foreign-invested private facilities (e.g., United Family, Amcare) are recommended.

  1. Make an appointment
Register with a passport (some hospitals also require a valid visa/residence permit) through the hospital’s app/mini-program or the city-wide booking platform.

  1. On the day of consultation
    • Arrive 30 min early, collect the ticket at a kiosk or counter, and bind it to a new clinic card (first visit).
    • Check in at the triage desk, wait for the call, see the doctor, and undergo any ordered tests/imaging after payment.

  1. Payment & pharmacy
Cash, UnionPay, Alipay, and WeChat are accepted.
    • If enrolled in Beijing’s basic insurance or a domestic plan, swipe the card at the cashier.
    • Otherwise pay out-of-pocket and keep all invoices, itemized bills, and medical records for later reimbursement.

  1. In-patient admission (if required)
Present the admission note, passport, and deposit at the admission office.
Daily statements are provided; final settlement is made on discharge.
Some international insurers can arrange direct billing with a guarantee letter requested in advance.

  1. Language support
Public hospitals have limited English counters; bring an interpreter or use the hospital’s remote interpreting service.

  2. Insurance & reimbursement
    • Beijing medical-insurance card holders: real-time coverage plus co-payment.
    • Overseas-insurance only: pay first, then claim at home with complete documentation; check whether the hospital is in the insurer’s direct-billing network.
    • No insurance: full self-pay, still cheaper than in most Western countries.

  1. Permanent-resident ID cardholders
Enjoy the same procedure as Chinese nationals—just swipe the card.

Quick timeline:
Book → Consult (check) → Pay & treat → Keep receipts/records → Claim (if insured)

Tips

  • Emergency visits: go directly to the ER with a passport; no appointment needed.
  • Ask the doctor to schedule the next visit before you leave to avoid re-booking.
  • Photocopy or photograph passport, visa, and insurance card before arrival.
