ITINERARY IN DETAILS

A grand 12-day loop that sweeps from imperial Beijing to mist-wrapped Great Wall battlements, then flies south to Chairman Mao’s riverside Changsha, rides bullet trains to ancient Nanjing, glides onward to poetic Hangzhou, and finishes amid Shanghai’s neon canyons. Every day is split into Morning, Afternoon, Evening segments, giving you double the detail, double the depth, and zero hotel plugs—just pure time-of-day guidance.

Day 1 Arrival in Beijing & the Forbidden City
Morning: Arrive Beijing Capital Airport, take the Airport Express into the city and head straight to Tiananmen Square. Stroll the vast plaza, view the Monument to the People’s Heroes and the Great Hall of the People, and, if timing aligns, witness the flag-raising ceremony. Walk north beneath Tiananmen Gate and enter the Forbidden City along the central axis, passing the Meridian Gate and the Gate of Supreme Harmony to reach the Hall of Supreme Harmony itself.
Afternoon: Deep-dive the Forbidden City—outer-court Three Great Halls, inner-court Palace of Heavenly Purity, Palace of Earthly Tranquility, the Six Eastern and Western Palaces, and the Treasure Gallery. Pause in the Imperial Garden under ancient pines and listen to wind rustling through cypress branches.
Evening: Exit the north gate (Shenwu Gate), climb Jingshan’s Wanchun Pavilion for a night-lit panorama of the palace axis glowing like a golden dragon. Afterwards, grab a takeaway “Thousand-Mile-River” latte from the Corner Tower Café, snap a final night shot of the turrets, and return to your accommodation.

Day 2 Great Wall Pride & Peking Duck Feast
Morning: Depart early by car or high-speed rail to Badaling. Arrive before 8 a.m. to beat the crowds. Walk from North Tower One up to North Tower Eight along ancient bricks, pausing inside beacon towers to imagine ancient smoke signals rising over the ridges.
Afternoon: Continue west on foot to quieter North Tower Twelve, where views stretch over endless mountain folds. On the descent, stop at the Great Wall Museum—maps, weapons, and dioramas tell the 2,000-year construction saga.
Evening: Back in Beijing, head to a century-old roast-duck restaurant. Watch the master carver slice paper-thin skin and juicy meat tableside, wrap them in lotus-leaf pancakes with sweet-bean sauce and cucumber, and wash it all down with warm osmanthus wine—your edible “hero’s coronation.”

Day 3 Old Beijing Culture, Hutongs & Peking Opera
Morning: Rent a shared bike and pedal from Nanluoguxiang into Yuer and Mao’er Hutongs. Step inside a preserved quadrangle to practice writing the character “Fu” with brush and ink while a local elder explains calligraphy strokes and the trill of pigeon whistles drifts overhead.
Afternoon: Glide in a black-awning boat across Shichahai’s Front and Back Lakes; onshore, browse Yandaixie Street for clay rabbit figurines and snuff bottles, then snack on old Beijing yogurt and sticky-rice rolls.
Evening: Catch a full-length Peking Opera—“The Drunken Beauty” or “Farewell My Concubine”—at Huguang Guild Hall or Mei Lanfang Grand Theatre. After the final gong, stroll Qianmen Street to see neon signs mirrored in rain-slicked cobblestones.

Day 4 Fly to Changsha & Orange Island Tribute
Morning: Take an early flight from Beijing to Changsha, then the maglev or metro into the city. Drop bags and head straight to Orange Island. Walk the riverside avenue toward the towering statue of young Mao Zedong, feeling the wind off the Xiang River.
Afternoon: Explore the island’s gardens, Mao Zedong poetry steles, and the riverside boardwalk. Pause at Ask-the-Heavens Platform to photograph the city skyline framed by the great river.
Evening: Wander to Pozi Street or Fire Palace for fiery Hunan cuisine—steamed fish head with diced chilies, crayfish in beer sauce, and sweet rice-balls in fermented rice wine—while neon lights pulse to the city’s youthful beat.

Day 5 Yuelu Mountain, Academy & Mawangdui Secrets
Morning: Ride to Yuelu Mountain. Hike the winding paths through maple and pine, stopping at Aiwan Pavilion for a panoramic view. Descend to Yuelu Academy—China’s millennium-old seat of learning—and trace the characters “Seek Truth from Facts” carved above the lecture hall.
Afternoon: Shuttle to Hunan Provincial Museum. Descend into the Mawangdui Han Tombs exhibition to stand face-to-face with the 2,100-year-old mummy of Lady Xin and marvel at the gauze-thin silk robes. Interactive screens reconstruct aristocratic life in the early Han Dynasty.
Evening: Meander down Huangxing Road pedestrian street for street snacks—black classic stinky tofu, peach-ginger sweets, shaved ice with rose syrup—under strings of red lanterns.

Day 6 High-Speed to Nanjing & Qinhuai River Night
Morning: Board a bullet train from Changsha South to Nanjing South (≈3.5 hours). Metro or taxi to the old city, store luggage, and rest briefly.
Afternoon: Wander Laomendong historic district—stone-paved alleys, Ming-Qing façades, and indie cafés. Pop into Librairie Avant-Garde for a coffee and a literary souvenir.
Evening: Board a lantern-boat on the Qinhuai River. Glide past Confucius Temple, the Wuyi Lane, and former courtesan quarters glowing with red and gold lights. Dockside, snack on Nanjing salted duck, duck-blood vermicelli soup, and beef pot-stickers.

Day 7 Zhongshan Scenic Area Full Day
Morning: Enter the Purple-Gold Mountain scenic zone. Walk the Sacred Way of the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum—stone elephants, camels, and guardian generals line the path. Climb the burial mound for sweeping forest views, then continue to Meiling Palace, the “First Villa of the East,” with its jade-green glazed tiles and Art-Deco staircases.
Afternoon: Free exploration—ride the cable car to the summit of Purple Mountain for vistas over the Yangtze, or cycle the shaded forest lanes. Optional stop at Linggu Temple’s beamless hall and pagoda.
Evening: Return downtown to Lion Bridge or Laomendong food streets for Jinling salted duck, lion’s-head meatballs, and sweet-scented osmanthus taro, all washed down with light plum wine.

Day 8 Jiming Temple Serenity & Xuanwu Lake Stroll
Morning: Early visit to Jiming Temple. Climb the incense-wreathed steps past spring cherry blossoms or autumn ginkgo leaves to the seven-story Medicine Buddha Pagoda for a view that frames Xuanwu Lake and Purple Mountain in one breath.
Afternoon: Enter Xuanwu Lake Park from Jiefang Gate. Circle the five islets via footbridges, rent a pedal-boat, or climb a stretch of Ming city wall for a bird’s-eye sweep of water, city, and sky.
Evening: Head to Hunan Road or Xinjiekou districts—bookstores, neon arcades, and night markets—ending with duck-fat sesame biscuits and red-bean tangyuan.

Day 9 High-Speed to Hangzhou & West Lake Elegance
Morning: Bullet train from Nanjing South to Hangzhou East (≈1 hour). Subway to Longxiangqiao, drop bags, and refresh.
Afternoon: Walk from Broken Bridge to Bai Causeway amid peach blossoms and willow catkins. Take a ferry to Lesser Yingzhou Island for the classic Three Pools Mirroring the Moon photo, then ride to Lingyin Temple—climb Feilai Peak grottoes to see 300-year-old cliff Buddhas.
Evening: Stroll Hefang Street or Southern Song Imperial Street—sample beggar’s chicken, Dongpo pork, and osmanthus cake under red lanterns.

Morning: Enter Songcheng Park early for the “Romance of the Song City” mega-performance—lavish sets, flying dancers, and water screens whisk you from Neolithic Liangzhu to the Southern Song court.
Afternoon: Roam Songcheng’s replica streets—join a mock imperial wedding, brave the haunted house, then bus or metro back to Hefang Street for last-minute souvenirs: silk fans, Longjing tea, and paper umbrellas.
Evening: Ascend Chenghuang Pavilion for a glittering panorama of West Lake and downtown, or simply linger lakeside for music fountain light shows.
