Guangzhou’s Main History
Founded as Panyu in the Qin dynasty and renamed Guangzhou in the Three Kingdoms period, the city became the starting point of the maritime Silk Road in the Tang and Song dynasties. During the Ming and Qing it was China’s sole “Canton” trading port. A cradle of modern democratic revolution, it was one of the first coastal open cities in 1984 and is now a national central city and the core engine of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
